Visiting Qatar

As a local tour guide in Qatar, we (souqsanddunes) often get asked for advice by travelers visiting Doha. Here are some quick tips to help you make the most of your trip:

  1. Research Qatar Weather and Be Prepared:

From May to September, Doha experiences soaring temperatures and high humidity. Thus if you’re visiting during these months, plan to focus on indoor attractions like museums, cafes, and city tours in air-conditioned cars. Also wear comfortable shoes and breathable clothing.

  2. Pre-Book Your Airport Transfer:

Avoid the hassle of airport taxis by pre-booking a private transfer. Also if you haven’t arranged a transfer, note that only the local Karwa taxi service is available for airport pick-up. Hence either through their Karwa app or by catching one parked outside the exit. However, you can use any other taxi for your return trip to the airport. Alternatively, the metro also connects the city to the airport, ensuring a smooth start to your journey.

  3. Get a Local SIM Card if Your Stay in Qatar Is More Than One Day:

Staying connected is essential. Also purchase a local SIM card upon arrival to easily book taxis and navigate the city.

  4. Stay in the Corniche or West Bay Area:

These central neighborhoods are ideal for visitors, hence offering easy access to Doha’s main attractions. You’ll find excellent accommodation options here.

  5. Adjust to ‘Doha Time’:

Doha comes to life in the evening, with many places opening late in the morning and staying active into the night. Also Fridays are particularly special, with most places closed until the afternoon due to Jumm’ah prayers.

  6. Respect the Dress Code:

Embrace Qatar’s dress code as a way to show respect for the local culture. Thus covering your shoulders and knees will not only help you fit in but also grant you access to cultural sites.

  7. Be Mindful of Ramadan in Qatar:

During Ramadan, daytime eating and drinking options are limited, as most public places are closed. Hence plan your meals in the West Bay or Pearl Qatar areas, and enjoy the vibrant nightlife after sunset.

  8. Know Your Currency and Tipping Etiquette:

The official currency is the Qatari riyal (QAR), with 1 USD equaling 3.64 QAR. Tipping is appreciated by service providers—10-15% is standard

By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy all that Doha has to offer. Safe travels!
